Salukis Take 9th, 10th at Gans Creek Classic

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Southern Illinois University cross country teams competed at the inaugural Gans Creek Classic on the campus of the University of Missouri on Friday.
The Saluki women finished 10th out of 12 teams in their first 6K of the season. With the Gans Creek course being highly touted as a state-of-the-art facility, the Salukis got a taste of what future regional and championship courses could look like.
Senior Olivia Murphy led the Salukis with her time of 22:57.3, good for 23rd in the race. Following Murphy was fellow senior Megan Krolak in 29th with a time of 23:05.1 and freshman Fallon Russell in 66th with a time of 24:21.3. Sophomore Sydney Matusik set an 8K PR with a time of 24:29.2, as did senior Madison Decker (24:47.9). Freshman Rachel Anderson finished 79th with a time of 25:10.3, while sophomore Grace McDurmon placed 83rd with a time of 25:29.8.
The University of Missouri women's team took first in their first-ever home meet with six top-15 finishers at 3-4-6-8-12-13. Texas A&M placed second while UMKC took third. Unattached runner Kaitlyn Shea, formerly of Southeast Missouri State, finished first individually with a time of 21:12.4.
For the Saluki men, redshirt senior Cain Hassim finished 20th overall with his time of 26:15.5. Sophomore Reid Parsons followed with his 31st overall finish (26:33.9). Rounding out the Saluki men was freshman JT Hodges in 57th with a time of 27:53.1, senior Chris Edwards in 66th with a time of 28:35.5, junior Jacob DeWitt in 68th with a time of 29:02.1 and junior Michael Church in 69th with a time of 29:28.7.
Missouri also took first on the men's side, as the team placed four runners in the top-15, including Thomas George's win. Texas A&M came within two points of Missouri for second place while fellow Missouri Valley Conference member Drake took third.
The Salukis will be off from competition as they will have the next three weeks to prepare for the Pre-National Invite, hosted by Indiana State University on Oct. 19.
