High-Level Indiana Relays Next for the Salukis

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University Salukis track and field program will head out to Bloomington, Indiana to take part in the Indiana Relays on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. Hosted by the University of Indiana, the Indiana Relays is regarded as one of the top meets in the country this weekend and will give the Salukis a chance to face-off against some of the top-tier programs in the country.
Meet Information
The Indiana Relays will take place at the Gladstien Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Indiana. Friday's track and field events will both begin at 4 p.m. CT. Saturday gets kicked off with track events beginning at 7:30 a.m. CT, followed by field events at 8:05 a.m. CT.
Admission to the meet is free to the public.

The Field
The Salukis will be one of 16 teams taking part in the two-day meet. Four of the top 16 teams competing are ranked in the men's top-25. Florida State (1), Wisconsin (16), Iowa State (20) and Illinois (21) round out the ranked competition, while the other programs include Alabama, California Riverside, Cincinnati, Georgetown, Indiana State, Miami (OH), Middle Tennessee, Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, Tulsa and Xavier.
Last Time Out
The Salukis are coming off of hosting the Don DeNoon Invitational this past weekend. Over the meet, Southern recorded seven individual event titles and one group title, the men's 4x400 meter relay. Alexis Roberson got the meet started with her victory in the weight throw with a mark of 20.85 meters (22'-7").
Erin Diemer racked up her second victory of the year in the pole vault by clearing a personal-best mark of 12'-5.5" (3.80 meters). Also earning individual event titles were Britney Mosby in the triple jump, Chris Edwards in the mile, Johnny McGluen in the 400 meter, and Tyjuana Eason in the 60 and 200 meters.

USTFCCCA Regional Rankings
The USTFCCCA Regional Rankings were released Jan. 27, which saw the Southern Illinois Salukis men and women's programs both find rankings within the top-25 of the Midwest Region. Southern's women came in at No. 16 with 57.62 points, trailing Illinois State by one spot for the top nod in the Missouri Valley Conference. On the men's side, SIU came in at No. 21, becoming one of six total MVC teams in the top-25 regional ranking.
Theo Phipps Named MVC-Scholar Athlete of the Week
For the first time in his career, Theo Phipps has been named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week, presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Tuesday.
Phipps, along with Bradley's Chelsea Brackmann, were honored for their performances during the week of Jan. 19-25. Phipps, a junior jumper/hurdler, won the 60 meter hurdles this past weekend at the Don DeNoon Invitational, his second victory in the event this season. Phipps holds a 3.91 GPA as a finance major.

After the conclusion of this weekend's Indiana Relays, the Salukis will have a weekend off from competition before heading down to Nashville, Tennessee to take part in the Vanderbilt Music City Challenge on Feb. 14-15.
