
Salukis Poised for 2022 MVC Indoor Championships

CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University Saluki track and field program will take to the road and head to Chicago, Illinois, to take part in the 2022 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Loyola-Chicago on Feb. 27-28.

Coverage of the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships will be broadcasted on ESPN3 beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27. ESPN3 coverage will resume for the final day of the championships on Monday, Feb. 28, at 11:15 a.m. Live stats will be provided and can be found on HERE.
Bringing the Hardware Home
The Saluki men are hoping to bring home an indoor title for the first time since 2012, while the women are hoping to hoist the trophy for the first time since 2009. The Salukis women have finished second in back-to-back years at the MVC Indoor Championships.
MVC Pre-Championship Poll
The MVC Pre-Championship Poll was released on Thursday, which tabbed the Saluki men to finish fifth. SIU tallied 43 points, finishing behind Drake (4th, 57 points), Illinois State (3rd, 66 points), Indiana State (2nd, 71 points), and Northern Iowa (1st, 75 points).
On the women's side, the Salukis were picked to finish second with 84 points. Southern trailed only unanimous Illinois State (1st, 100 points).
Against the Conference
On the men's side, senior Omar Rodgers was a 2-time winner this indoor season. He currently ranks sixth in the MVC with his time of 8.14 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. Senior Corey Sherrod also has had a strong indoor season thus far, his 200-meter time of 21.94 ranks eighth in the MVC. In the last competition before the MVC Indoor Championships, the men's 4x400 relay team was able to run a season best of 3:15.35, which is sits at second in the Valley. On the field side, Cole Targgart has been able to have success in both shot put and weight throw. Targgart comes in at sixth in the MVC with his shot mark of 17.44m (57' 2.75"), and eighth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 18.43m (60' 5.75").
For the women, Iaunia Pointer ranks first in the 200m (23.90) and third in the 60m (7.53) for the Valley. Kayla Schiera holds the fourth best MVC time for the 3000m (9:34.61) and is also ranked fourth in the mile as well (4:53.82). Savannah Long ranks third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.72). The Salukis hold the top five best marks in the Valley this season for the weight throw with Elisia Lancaster, Shauniece O'Neal, Bri'Yanna Robinson, Matisen Ingle, and Kaitlyn Burson. Lancaster ranks 7th nationally, while O'Neal comes in at 11th. A'veun Moore-Jones ranks first in the Valley and 7th nationally in the shot put alongside teammates Bri'Yanna Robinson, who is ranked second in the Valley and 26th nationally going into this weekend, and Kayleigh Conlon who comes in at fourth in the MVC.
