Saluki Women Finish Third, Men Sixth at MVC Indoor Championships

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Southern Illinois University track and field program wrapped up its indoor season at the 2022 Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Championships on Monday.
The women of Southern Illinois placed third overall after scoring a total of 103 team points. The Sycamores of Indiana State took home the conference title, beating Illinois State who was unanimously picked as the favorite in the Pre-Championship poll. The Sycamores finished with 132 points, the Redbirds trailed with 117.
On the men's side, the Salukis placed sixth with 49 points. Indiana State was able to double up and win the men's championships as well, scoring a total of 171 points. Illinois State (164 points) and Northern Iowa (123 points) rounded out the top-3.
The women's weight throw got the Salukis in the point column on Sunday afternoon. The Dawgs were able to sweep the podium, and take five of the top six spots. Shauniece O'Neal defended her MVC title and won the event for the second consecutive year by tossing a PR mark of 23.11m. Elisia Lancaster (21.10m) and Matisen Ingle (20.50m | PR) were able to round out the podium earning All-Conference honors. Kaitlyn Burson (19.58m) and Bri'Yanna Robinson (18.79m) placed fourth and sixth respectively, securing big points for the Salukis on day one.
The other excitement of the first day came in the women's 5000m. Senior Kayla Schiera was able to finish fourth in her first 5k action of the indoor season. Her time of 16:37.32 set a new SIU record, beating the previous record held by Sadie Darnell by more than 11 seconds. That is the second record Kayla has broken this indoor season, she previously shattered the 3000m record in early February.
A'veun Moore-Jones was also able to defend her MVC title when she captured gold in the women's shot put on Monday. Moore-Jones was able to mark at 17.48m (57' 4.25") on her final toss. That is the third consecutive meet that she has went 17m+. The Salukis were once again able to sweep the podium thanks to a second place finish by Bri'Yanna Robinson (15.84m) and bronze mark by Kayleigh Conlon (15.40m).
Iaunia Pointer was able to reach the podium twice on Monday. Her second place finish in the women's 60m earned her All-Conference honors. Her time of 7.50 was a new personal best and moved to her into a tie for third all-time in the SIU record books. She later achieved gold in the women's 200m. Her time of 23.60 was a new PR and a new school record. She unseated Tyjuana Eason who has held the top mark since 2019.
Dawson Plab and Trevor Thompson both won bronze in the men's high jump. Plab and Thompson were both able to clear 2.03m (6' 8") in route to All-Conference honors. That height was a new personal best for Thompson. To close out the indoor championships, the SIU men's 4x400 relay was able to capture silver with a indoor season best time of 3:14.94. The squad consisted of Omar Rodgers, Darrione Williams, Ja'Den Johnson, and Corey Sherrod.
Shauniece O'Neal was named the MVC's Most Outstanding Field Athlete after winning the weight throw on Sunday with a personal-best mark of 23.11m (75' 10"), which improves her third farthest mark in program history. That mark currently ranks O'Neal fifth in the NCAA for the indoor season. That is the second consecutive year that O'Neal has won the Valley award, and also the eighth consecutive year a SIU student-athlete has won the award.
