O'FALLON, Ill. — The Southern Illinois men's and women's swimming and diving teams ended in a split on Thursday afternoon. The women finished with a score of 230-60, while the men scored 179-115.
On the women's side, the Salukis got off to a fast start in the 200-yard medley relay, sweeping the podium. Liseska Gutierrez, Olivia Herron, Celia Pulido, and Susana Hernandez posted a first-place finish with a time of 1:43.47.
Fernanda Sanchez took first place in the 1,000-yard freestyle, followed by teammates Apryl Paquette and Ale Hoyas Horvath. Hernandez was victorious in the 200-yard freestyle, and Pulido earned her first 100-yard backstroke win of the season.
Southern Illinois filled the podium again in the women's 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, and 200-yard individual medley. Olivia Herron won the breaststroke with a time of 1:04.09, Jules Atkinson claimed the butterfly in 2:05.36, and Herron took first place in the 200-yard individual medley.
For the men, the Salukis opened with a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:30.40. Joshua Aceves had the first individual top-three finish of the afternoon with second place in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Alex Cimera finished third in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.74.
The relay team of Cimera, Will Huggins, AJ Terry, and Alex Santiago closed out the meet with a first-place victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
The Salukis will host Missouri State on Friday, Oct. 4, at 3 p.m. for the Dual in the Dale.
