Saluki Hall of Fame Election Process and Requirements (Updated, 2023)
Authorization
By authorization of the director of athletics, Saluki Athletics will hold an election every year for the purpose of electing members to the Saluki Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony will take place during Homecoming Weekend, or alternatively, during a designated men’s basketball home weekend in January or February.
Electors
Electors will consist of a Hall of Fame committee. The Hall of Fame committee consists of current and former Saluki Athletic administrators and student-athletes, as selected by the director of athletics. To protect privacy, the names of committee members will not be publicly disclosed.
Eligible Candidates
To be eligible for Hall of Fame consideration, there is a five-year waiting period for student-athletes, a 10-year waiting period for teams, and no waiting period for administrators.
Candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria to be eligible for consideration:
- Athletic Distinction: Olympic qualifier, All-American, All-Conference, Conference Specialty Award, High Ranking within a career statistical category at SIU
- Administrative Distinction: Outstanding career as a coach, administrator or professional staff member that has brought exceptional distinction to the department
- Distinguished professional athletic accomplishments after leaving the University
- Distinguished non-athletic accomplishments after leaving the University
- Teams will merit consideration based upon extraordinary postseason achievement.
Nominating Process
Anyone can nominate an individual for the Hall of Fame by submitting a nomination through the official Athletics website. The Hall of Fame committee will determine whether an individual meets the minimum criteria for consideration.
Responsibilities of the Committee
The committee will maintain a working list of eligible candidates. The committee will meet each spring to review the list and select an elite ballot of no less than 20 individuals or teams. The size of each class will be determined by the committee and should range between 3-6 individuals and/or teams.
Voting
Voting will be based upon the individual’s statistical record, honors, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, team success, and distinction brought to the University. Voters will rank candidates in numeric order with “1” indicating their top choice.
Timeline of Election
Ballots will be finalized no later than June of each year. The induction class will be announced, in alphabetical order, no later than July of each year.
Special Circumstances
In the event an inductee is unable to attend the induction ceremony, they will have the option to postpone their induction to a future year.
If an inductee is deceased, the immediate family will be notified of the induction and offered the opportunity to attend the induction ceremony on the inductee’s behalf.
Amendments
The director of athletics reserves the right to revoke, alter or amend the process and requirements at any time.
