Series History
The Salukis and the Shockers meet for the 70th time in a series that dates back to 1981. Southern leads the all-time series 36-33 and snapped a three-game losing streak to Wichita State last season with an 80-66 win at the SIU Arena. SIU has now won two of its last three at home against the Shockers, and holds a 21-11 all-time record at home against Wichita State. Southern is seeking back-to-back home wins against the Shockers for the first time since 2010.
Current Salukis vs. the Shockers
Rishonda Napier comes into Friday's contest averaging 15.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game in five career meetings against the Shockers. In SIU's 80-66 win over Wichita State on Feb. 21, 2016, the Burbank, Calif. native scored 30 points to help Southern break a three-game losing streak to Wichita State. It marked one of three times that Napier has scored 30 points or more. In four games against the Shockers, Kylie Giebelhausen is shooting 45.5% from both the field (20-of-39) and from beyond the arc (10-of-22) and averages 12.5 points per contest. She had 14 points in last year's win at the SIU Arena.
Scouting the Shockers
The Shockers have lost four-straight coming into Friday's contest, and are 0-3 to start MVC play. Wichita State lost to a pair of teams that SIU defeated in UMKC and Purdue, but defeated Creighton in its season opener. Rangie Bessard is averaging 16.2 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, and averaged 16.0 points and 7.0 rebounds in two meetings against the Salukis last season. TaQuandra Mike was a thorn in Southern's side last season, as she averaged 16.5 points on 51.7% shooting. This season, she's averaging 9.4 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.
Threes in bunches
The Salukis made 10 three-pointers against Drake Sunday night, marking the fourth time this season that Southern has made 10 or more in a game. It is the most games with 10-plus threes in a single-season in program history.
New school record
Rishonda Napier made a pair of three-pointers against Drake on Sunday to become SIU's all-time career leader in three-pointers made. The Burbank, Calif. native now has 237 for her career, besting the previous mark of 235 set by Teri Oliver. She has the 11th-most made three-pointers amongst active D1 players, and the 14th-most in Missouri Valley Conference history.
One of just five in school history
Rishonda Napier became the fifth Saluki all-time to amass 1,500 career points this past weekend. She joins Cartaesha Macklin (2011-16), Amy Rakers (1987-91), Char Warring (1980-84), and Sue Faber (1979-93) in that exclusive club. With her 12 points against the Bulldogs on Sunday, Napier moved past Faber for fourth on SIU's all-time scoring list and now has 1,512 career points.
Triple Sevens
Nicole Martin has been a force on the glass for the Salukis as of late, as she's grabbed seven rebounds in three-straight games. She scored a team-best 16 points and grabbed seven boards against the Northern Iowa Panthers on Friday, and followed with seven rebounds against the Drake Bulldogs on Sunday.
Coming up on 700
Kylie Giebelhausen needs just nine points to become the 35th Saluki to reach 700 career points. She will also be the only Saluki with at least 700 points/90 blocks/150 assists/70 steals/300 rebounds. The junior from East Peoria, Ill. has reached double-digits in 10 of SIU's 15 games this season, most recently posting 12 points against Drake on Jan. 8.
Thievery
The Salukis tallied 10 steals versus Drake on Sunday, Jan. 8, the second time this season that Southern has nabbed 10 or more. It marks the first time SIU has notched 10-plus steals against a Missouri Valley Conference opponent since March 7, 2015, when the Salukis recorded 12 versus the Illinois State Redbirds.
19 points from Third
Rishonda Napier moved into fourth on SIU's all-time scoring list on Sunday, and needs 19 points this weekend to pass Char Warring (1980-84) for third. Second place is also within her grasp, as she needs 27 points to pass Amy Rakers (1987-91).
Carbondale Ties
Wichita State assistant coach Kaci Bailey played at SIU from 2005-09 and was on the 2006-07 team that won the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title. She appeared in 101 games during her Saluki career and scored 241 points primarily as a three-point specialist. Her 34.8% career three-point percentage remains the 10th-best in school history.
Three away from sixth
Rishonda Napier dished out her 358th career assist against the Bulldogs on Sunday and the Preseason All-MVC selection needs three assists to pass current Carbondale Community High School women's basketball coach Marialice Jenkins (360) for sixth on SIU's all-time list and with four over the weekend, the Burbank, Calif. native can crack the top-5 all-time. Napier has notched 5-plus assists in seven games this season, including a career-high 11 in SIU's win over Memphis on Dec. 11.
4. Kasia McClendon 1993-97 365
5. Nikki Gilmore 1992-96 361
6. Marialice Jenkins 1983-87 360
7. Rishonda Napier 2012-pres. 358
Kim Nebo's Rise
Kim Nebo has scored in double-figures seven times this season, and has set or tied her career-high for points on three separate occasions. She has nearly made as many field goals (65) through 15 games as she made in 33 games (67) last year and is five points from surpassing her 2015-16 point total. The Katy, Texas native is currently third on the team in scoring (10.2/game).
Six career double-doubles
Nebo has recorded four double-doubles this season, and six for her career. SIU is 6-0 when she records a double-double.
Corrigan's next assist
Carlie Corrigan's next assist will give her 30 for the season- or one more than she had in 33 appearances a year ago.
Giebelhausen leads the league
Kylie Giebelhausen currently leads the MVC in three-pointers made (35), three-point fields goals per game (2.33) and three-point field goal percentage (38.9%). Since 1987, only three Salukis have finished the season leading the conference in three-point field goal percentage, with the last coming in 2008. That year, Erin Pauk shot 44.7% from downtown to lead the Valley.
Following Giebelhausen's lead
Giebelhausen has led the Salukis in scoring three times this season, most recently in SIU's win over UMKC on Dec. 19. Southern is 3-0 in games where Giebelhausen leads the team in scoring.
