01/28/2017 | 4:37:00 | Women's Basketball
Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
The Southern Illinois women's basketball team travels to Normal, Ill. to tangle with the Illinois State Redbirds. The 107th meeting between the two programs tips off at 2 p.m. CST.Â
Series History
The Salukis and the Redbirds meet for the 107th time in a series that dates back to the 1961-62 season. Southern trails the all-time series, 46-60, but SIU has won three of its last four against the Redbirds. The Salukis snapped a 13-game losing streak to the Redbirds with a 65-56 win in Normal, Ill. on Jan. 4, 2015. Last season, SIU swept the season series from Illinois State for the first time since the 2000-01 season.
Current Salukis vs. the Redbirds
Rishonda Napier comes into Friday's contest averaging 14.2 points, 2.3 assists, 1.6 steals and 2.5 rebounds per game in six career meetings against the Redbirds. Napier has scored in double figures in four of those six games, including 26 points in SIU's 65-56 win at Illinois State on Jan. 4, 2015. Kylie Giebelhausen is averaging 6.8 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 2.5 assists per game in four career meetings, which included 13 points, three blocks and a career-high four steals in Southern's win over ISU on Jan. 31, 2016.
Scouting the Redbirds
Illinois State snapped a six-game losing streak Friday night with a 71-58 win over Evansville. Senior Brechelle Beachum is averaging 12.1 points per game and has led the Redbirds in scoring in four of their last five games, including 21 points in the win over the Purple Aces.
Seniors hitting the century mark
Rishonda Napier's next game will be the 115th of her career- which will tie her with Mary Berghuis, Cathy Kampwerth and Kelly Firth for 10th on SIU's all-time list. Carlie Corrigan will play the 107th game of her career Sunday, which will tie her for 28th in school history, while Kim Nebo will play her 100th career game against Illinois State. She will become just the 44th Saluki to appear in 100 career games.Â
Playing Grown Up Minutes
Kristen Nelson played a career-high 24 minutes in the win over Bradley, and dished out five assists, which tied her career-best. Nicole Martin, who started for the second-straight game, played 27 minutes and scored nine points and grabbed five boards. Her 27 minutes were the second-most she's played in a game this season.
Making her presence felt
Kim Nebo had one of her best defensive efforts in the win over Bradley, as she set or tied career-bests in both steals (2) and blocks (2).Â
Hedging out on shooters
The Salukis held Bradley to just 7.7% (1-of-13) shooting from downtown, and it marked the fourth time this season that Southern has held an opponent to one or fewer treys. SIU ranks first in the Valley, and 20th in the nation, in opponent's three-point field goal percentage, holding foes to just 27.3% shooting from beyond the arc.
In a club by herself
Kylie Giebelhausen reached 700 career points and became the only Saluki with at least 700 points/90 blocks/150 assists/70 steals/300 rebounds. The junior from East Peoria, Ill. has reached double-digits in 14 of SIU's 19 games this season and tallied 12 points and four boards in the win over Bradley.Â
No. 600
SIU head coach Cindy Stein coached her 600th career game at Bradley, the most of any active Valley coach. Missouri State's Kellie Harper is second, having coached 412 career games. Stein's 333 career wins are also the most of any active Valley coach.
Climbing up the ranks
Rishonda Napier has made 252 career three-pointers, the most in school history and she's 12th on the conference's all-time list.Â
10. 258- Melody Howard (Mo. State, 1991-94)
11. 256- Kourtney Mennen (Ind. State, 1999-03)
12. 252- Rishonda Napier (SIU, 2012-pres.)
Points-Assists Double-Doubles
There have been 22 points-assists double-doubles in school history, most recently when Rishonda Napier posted 18 points and 11 assists in Southern's win over Wichita State on Jan. 13. Napier is one of only four Salukis to have recorded multiple points-assists double-doubles in the same season, joining D.D. Plab, Cartaesha Macklin and Nikki Gilmore in having done so. Gilmore holds the school record with three points-assists double-doubles during the 1993-94 season. The Burbank, Calif. native is one of seven Salukis to record multiple points-assists double-doubles in a career, and Napier's 18 points in the win over the Shockers are tied for the fifth-most points scored by a Saluki in a game in which that same player dished out double-digit assists. The Salukis are 15-7 all-time in games where they have a player record a points-assists double-double.

Assists-Rebounds Double-Double
Holly Teague recorded the only assists-rebounds double-double in school history in a 65-71 loss to Indiana State on Jan. 17, 2002. Teague finished one point shy of a triple-double, as she had 9 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. It's the closest a Saluki has ever come to a triple-double.
10-plus assists in a single game
Rishonda Napier has recorded 11 assists twice in a game this season. It marked the 36th and 37th time in school history a player has dished out double-digit assists, and Napier became the 19th different Saluki to do so. Her 11 assists are the seventh-most in a single game in program history, while SIU holds a .540 winning percentage (20-17) in games in which a Saluki dishes out 10-plus assists.
3 from 200 career assists
Kylie Giebelhausen comes into Sunday 22nd in school history with 197 career assists. With two assists she will pass current Illinois Central College head coach Karrie Redeker for 21st on Southern's all-time list, and can crack the top-20 in school history with eight assists
19. Holly Teague 2000-02 232
20. Beth Hasheider 1994-98 204
21. Karrie Redeker   1988-92 198
22. Kylie Giebelhausen 2014-pres. 197
Making the most of her opportunities
Kristen Nelson went 1-for-1 from behind the arc and has made 73.6% (14-of-19) of her three-pointers this season, including a streak earlier this season in which she made eight-straight without a miss. The school record for three-point shooting percentage in a season is 44.7%, set by Erin Pauk in 2007-08. By NCAA standards, a three-point shooter has to average at least two attempts per contest to be ranked in the nation in the category, but Southern's top-10 all-time list is a bit more forgiving. Anita Scott, for instance, shot 41.3% from three-point range during the 1992-93 season, the fourth-best mark in school history, despite the fact she only attempted 46 three-pointers all season- or just over 1.58 per game.
Dishing out helpers
Rishonda Napier is currently averaging 4.8 assists per game this season, second only to Drake's Caitlyn Ingle for highest average in the Valley. If Napier's average holds, it would be the ninth-highest in a single-season in school history, and the most since Stephany Neptune averaged 5.0 assists per game during the 2009-10 season.
Uncharted Territory
The Salukis have made 10-plus three-pointers in seven games, including a streak of four-straight games with 10 or more. Both are school records, as SIU's seven games this season with 10-plus three-pointers is more than the previous four seasons combined. Southern has made an average of 7.8 three-pointers per game this season, well above the school record of 6.67 set last year.Â
During head coach Cindy Stein's 20 seasons as a head coach, her teams, on average, shoot 473.3 three-pointers, making nearly 151.6 per season. Interestingly enough, the 2015-16 Salukis made (220) and attempted (663) the most three-pointers of any Stein helmed team. The 2016-17 squad is on-pace to crush both totals, as they are 149-of-416 (.358) from downtown through 19 games.
Time is on her side
Rishonda Napier sits at 3,754 career minutes, the second-most in school history. She is second to Cartaesha Macklin, who became the first Saluki to reach the 4,000-minutes played mark last year and finished her career having played 4,088 career minutes.Â
Not Far from Top-3
Kylie Giebelhausen made two three-pointers in the win over Bradley on Jan. 27, and has made 157 during her career. She currently is tied with Karen Powell for fourth on Southern's all-time list, and needs to make five more to pass Karrie Redeker for third on the list.
