Southern tallied eight top-10 school marks at the two-day meet.
The Southern Illinois track and field team tallied eight top-10 school marks, eight first place finishes and 14 runner-up performances at the two-day Gibson Invitational, hosted by Indiana State.
Both the Saluki men and women took third in the team standings as SIU's men scored 133 points to finish behind Illinois State (154) and Indiana State (187). The Saluki women, meanwhile, amassed 143 points to place third behind Indiana State (153) and Illinois State (194).Â
Eight Salukis won Saturday, including Kyle Landon, who won both the long jump and triple jump. The Chester, Ill. native's day began with a win in the long jump after he cleared a slightly wind-aided 24'-2.5" (7.38m) and followed with a winning mark of 49'-5" (15.06m) in the triple jump. With four meets until the NCAA West Regional, the five-time All-American is in position to qualify for the regional meet in all three jumps. He currently ranks third in the NCAA West Region in the high jump, 21st in the long jump and 27th in the triple jump.
Jared Kern picked up his first event title of the outdoor season. The 2017 NCAA Indoor All-American won the shot put with a toss of 63'-5" (19.33m). While it did not improve upon his previous best mark, the Machesney Park, Ill. native holds on to the top spot in the NCAA West Region and is ranked fourth in the shot in the NCAA.
Ricky Hurley won his first collegiate event title in the discus, as he threw a lifetime-best 179'-00" (54.55m) Saturday. With his nearly 11 foot PR, the Fox River Grove, Ill. native jumps from 79th in the NCAA West Region to 20th. It also was the eighth-longest throw in school history. Kyle Kling joined Hurley on SIU's all-time top-10 list after he threw a personal-best 176'-10" (53.90m) to finish second. The Machesney Park, Ill. native now has the 10th-best throw in school history.
The Saluki men's pole vaulters accounted for 22 of SIU's 133 points, as Nathan Schuck took first, Chad Weaver claimed second and Chase Black finished fourth. Schuck and Weaver both cleared 17'-1.75" (5.23m), which ties them for fifth on SIU's all-time performance list and 13th in the NCAA West Region.
The Saluki sprinters registered several top performances on a less than ideal day for recording regional qualifying marks, as a tailwind that picked up early in the day invalidated more than a few would be top-15 regional marks.
Warren Hazel ran the fifth-fastest 200m time in school history Saturday, as he took second with a time of 20.77. Fellow Old Roads, St. Kitts native Shafiqua Maloney came close to breaking the school 200m record, as she won the event with a time of 23.65. Her mark, which is second to Denise Blackmon's 1986 time of 23.43, would have been the 32nd-best time in the NCAA West Region.
Tyjuana Eason continued her breakout sophomore outdoor season, as she recorded a lifetime-best 100m time. She finished second with a time of 11.56, which is the second-fastest time in school history. Mystique Thompson was right behind Eason as she crossed the finish line in 11.57. Bri'Anna Branch took fourth, as she ran the fifth-fastest time in school history at 11.63.Â
The trio later joined forces with Genesis Ewell to take first in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:45.93.
Kilee Hagerstand claimed runner-up honors in the 100m hurdles after she ran a personal-best 13.91 to finish second to Illinois State's Demetria Anderson. Her mark is the seventh-fastest in school history. She added another eight points with a runner-up finish in the long jump, as she also set a new PR in the event with a leap of 18'-7.25" (5.67m).Â
The Saluki women's pole vaulters racked up 20 points on the strength of Katie Trupp's second win of the outdoor season. Trupp cleared 12'-10.75" (3.93m) on her second attempt, while her teammate, Cara Engel, settled for runner-up honors on account of having had one more miss to clear the same height. Kacy Murphy added two points with a fifth-place finish after she cleared 11'-7" (3.53m).Â
The Salukis are next at the Kansas Relays beginning on Friday, April 21.Â
