Saluki Track and Field set to compete at 90th Kansas Relays

Saturday's scored invitational begins at 4:30 p.m.
The Salukis will lace up this weekend to compete in a quad meet featuring the University of California, the University of Missouri-Kansas City men's team, the University of Minnesota women's squad and the hosts, the Kansas Jayhawks.Â
"Were trying to put forth our best team this weekend at the Kansas Relays," SIU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Kathleen Raske said. "The beautiful part of a quad scored track meet is that it keeps the score really close and exciting."
The meet will be the second-straight team scored meet for the Salukis, as Southern's men and women each took third at the Gibson Invitational. However, SIU rested several key athletes at last weekend's competition in order to be better prepared for the Kansas Relays. Raske hopes the Salukis are ready to compete for the team crowns come Saturday.
"This weekend is not about times and distances, it's about competing," Raske said. "I want to see us compete hard this weekend and I want to see us come together as a team and invest in each other while understanding the importance of the team score."Â
At last weekend's Gibson Invitational, Southern set 25 personal-bests and recorded eight top-10 school marks. 17 of SIU's 25 PRs came on the track, but wind gusts of over 30 miles per hour invalidated the marks. Raske said that while it was frustrating that the wind didn't cooperate, the meet still served a valuable purpose.
"For the sprinters, it was still fun for them to feel like they were running really fast," Raske said. "It was a confidence booster as well. You still have to be fast to run those times. From that standpoint, we still got a lot out of the (Gibson Invitational), we just wish we hit a few more allowable wind readings."
Shafiqua Maloney was one of the Salukis who benefitted most from the wind, as she won the 200m with a personal-best time of 23.65. While the mark won't count due to wind assistance, the Old Roads, St. Kitts native came close to breaking SIU's 200m record of 23.43 that has stood for 30 years. Her country-mate, Warren Hazel, ran the 200m in 20.77, the fourth-fastest 200m in SIU history.
In the women's 100m, Tyjuana Eason, Mystique Thompson and Bri'Anna Branch all tied or set PRs in the event, with Eason running the second-fastest time in school history at 11.56. Thompson finished in 11.57 to tie her lifetime-best, while Branch ran 11.63, the sixth-fastest mark in program history.
Southern's pole vaulters took full advantage of getting to vault with a tailwind, with both Nathan Schuck and Chad Weaver recording lifetime-best clearances of 17'-1.75" (5.23m). Both Weaver and Schuck are now ranked fifth in school history, and 15th in the NCAA West Region.Â
SIU's discus throwers also found the wind to be of assistance, as three Saluki men recorded personal-bests. Ricky Hurley led the way, as he won his first collegiate event title with a lifetime-best toss of 179'-00" (54.55m). It was not only an 11 foot PR, but It was also the eight-best mark in school history and the 22nd-best in the NCAA West Region. Kyle Kling wasn't far behind Hurley, as he notched the 10th-best mark in program history with a heave of 176'-10" (53.90m) to take second. The Machesney Park, Ill. native is now ranked 27th in the NCAA West Region with four meets to go. Nathan Stout was the third Saluki to set a PR in the discus at the Gibson Invitational, as he upped his personal-best in the discus for the second-straight meet.
Saturday's scored invitational begins at 4:30 p.m. with the shot put, discus and pole vault. ESPN3 will simulcast the meet beginning at 6:30 p.m. and can be viewed here.
