Saluki Track and Field heads to Nashville for Vanderbilt Invitational

The Southern Illinois track and field team will head to Nashville, Tenn. for the fifth-annual Vanderbilt Invitational. SIU is one of 22 teams set to compete at the two-day meet that gets underway on Friday, Jan. 19 at 4 p.m.
Illini Open Review
The Southern Illinois women's track and field team won the Illini Open while the Saluki men's team took home second. The Salukis combined to win nine event titles and had 19 top-3 finishes, which included five top-10 school marks.Â
Vanderbilt Invitational: Surveying the field
More than 700 athletes from 22 teams are scheduled to compete at the fifth-annual Vanderbilt Invitational, with the following schools represented: Alabama, Auburn, Belmont, Connecticut, Furman, Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State, Maryland, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, SMU, Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, UAB, Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky. Â Â
The meet gets underway on Friday with field events at 4 p.m. CT and running events at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the meet will start with unseeded running events at 10 a.m. followed by field events at 10:30 a.m.
Plenty of PRs at Illini Open
Southern notched 15 personal-bests at the Illini Open on Jan. 13, led by Tyjuana Eason, who notched PRs in both the 60m and the 200m, which included breaking her own school record in the 200m. Ricky Hurley, Adam Kessler and Alexis Roberson each set personal-bests in the weight throw, while Erin Diemer and Kevin Turner both set PRs for the second-straight meet.
Welcome to Carbondale
Marcellus Fletcher, a sophomore transfer from Tennessee, made his much-anticipated debut at the Illini Open on Jan. 13 and took third in the triple jump with a mark of 46'-10.25" (14.28m). It is currently the fourth-best jump in the MVC, with three Salukis currently ranked in the top-four of the triple jump.Â
More Debuts
The Vanderbilt Invitational will mark the Saluki debut of Mesha Newbold, who was a five-time NJCAA All-American at Iowa Central Community College. Newbold is set to compete in the 60m dash, the 200m dash and the 60m hurdles on Saturday.Â
Warren Hazel will make his season debut in the 200m and the 400m at the Vandy Invite, as will Chrissa Harris in the 400m.
The Saluki distance runners will also make their indoor debuts. The Salukis have six runners entered in the men's 3,000m run and four set to run in the women's 3000m.Â
On the men's side, Josh Maier will run in section one while Cain Hassim will run in section two. Chris Edwards, Michael Church, Jacob DeWitt and Theo Hassim will all run in the third of three sections.
For the women, Megan Krolak will make her Saluki indoor debut in the first of four sections of the 3,000m run. Kelly O'Shea and Claire Darnell will both run in section three while Olivia Murphy will run in section four.
Cracking the Top-10
Southern notched five top-10 school marks at the Illini Open, including Tyjuana Eason record-breaking performance in the 200m. Below is a list of the Salukis who posted top-10 school marks at the Illini Open. It marked the second-straight meet that Erin Diemer and Kevin Turner have set PRs and improved upon their top-10 marks.
