On Thursday, September 9, SIU was upended by SIUE, 0-5. The last non-conference match at home, the Dawgs left answered, in a 0-2 loss to Bellarmine in midfield action. Starting conference, the Dawgs held Missouri State scoreless in the second half, but dropped 0-3 on a Friday night in Carbondale. Hailey Blanchard scored the third goal of the Salukis' season, while SIU fell 1-3 to Murray State in their final non-conference game of 2021 on Sunday, September 19. Heading back into conference action, the Salukis scored for the second consecutive game at Illinois State, which resulted in a 1-2 fall. In the first of two mid-week Wednesday matches, the Salukis held Valpo scoreless for 74 minutes, in a 0-2 loss. Coming back home to Lew Hartzog Complex, the Salukis showed growth in a 0-1 battle with Drake, which resulted in four saves and SIU outshooting the Bulldogs, 11-7.
Scouting Loyola: As the reining MVC champions, the Ramblers dropped to Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in North Carolina, 1-3. Loyola held an 8-2-1 (6-1-1) record in spring 2021. The Ramblers overtook every Valley opponent, except a fall to Evansville in the last match of the regular season. They defeated both Illinois State (2-1, 2OT) and Valparaiso (1-0) to advance to NCAA's.
On the road in Loyola Soccer Park last year, the Rambles outscored the Salukis, in a 0-5 loss. The Fall 2021 Ramblers won in exhibition to Northwestern, drew scoreless in double-overtime to Wisconsin, and have a perfect Valley record, only drawing 0-0 to Missouri State on Senior Day.
