
Saluki Track and Field Wraps Up Competition at Ole Miss Classic

OXFORD, Miss. – The Southern Illinois University track and field program concluded its second outdoor meet of the 2021 season on Saturday at the Ole Miss Classic.
In all, 25 SIU student-athletes finished in the top-five of their respective events over the two-day meet.
On the women's side, senior Savannah Long was the lone event winner as the Dekalb, Ill., native won the 400-meter hurdles at 1:01.15, finishing just two seconds behind her PR. Long also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles after finishing at 14.26 (+0.7).
Freshman Iaunia Pointer finished second in the women's 200-meter dash (24.17/-0.3) and fifth in the 400-meter (56.75). Sophomore Rachel Anderson took third in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a PR of 11:17.32.
Erin Diemer moved up to seventh on the SIU all-time outdoor pole vault list after clearing 3.86m/12-08, setting a new outdoor PR. Over at the ring, Shauniece O'Neal took third in the hammer with a mark of 63.22m/207-09, while A'veun Moore-Jones took fourth in the shot put with an overall best throw of 16.01m/52-6.5.
On the men's side, Ethan Senti won his first collegiate outdoor event after winning the 5000-meter at a PR of 15:07.38. Fellow freshman Travis Hart won his first collegiate event as well, as the Fort Branch, Ind., native clocked in at a PR of 9:49.71 in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Competing in the same event, Dawson Smith set a PR after finishing second with a time of 9:49.74.
Willie Johnson took second in the 400-meter dash with a PR of 47.60, while sophomore Kyle Lind took second in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.37 (+2.4).
In the field events, Ricky Hurley took second in the hammer and third in the discus, while Willie Rodgers took fifth in the long jump.
The Salukis will get a week off of competition before picking things back up on April 9-10 for the Tom Botts Invitational.
