
Women Race to Fourth, while Men Finish Fifth at CSCAA Open Water Championship

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- In the first meet of the 2021-22 season, SIU's swimming and diving program had eight swimmers compete in the annual CSCCA College National Open Water Championship at Lone Star Lake, hosted by the University of Kansas. Distance swimmers from the Salukis consisted of four men and four women landed the women's team in fourth place with 57 points, while the men finished fifth with 47 points.
The women competing, freshman Ana Tanda, sophomores Fernanda Sanchez and Mariana Sanchez, and senior Eden Girloanta, fell to Nebraska, Rice, and Purdue in team points. Senior distancer Girloanta placed third individually, finishing the 5000-meter outdoor course in 1:04.26.9. Following suit was M. Sanchez in 24th (1:08.32.1), F. Sanchez in 30th (1:08.39.9), and Tanda in 56th (1:11.12.7).
For the men's squad, junior Ian Marshall finished the highest in Maroon, placing 12th with a clock of 1:02.48.4. Sophomore Ben Rutledge trailed closely behind with a time stamp of 1:02.58.4 finishing in 15th. The Dawgs finished behind Northern Michigan, Emmanuel, Carson-Newman, and Ashland in team points, with sophomore Austin Kinsler placed 20th (1:05.32.3), and junior Sam Flessner placed 26th (1:07.34.3).
SIU last competed in the Open Water Championships in 2018, with only the men competing, Southern Illinois placed eighth out of 18 schools, with a 23rd place leader.
The Salukis open conference action and the first dual-meet of the 2021-22 season at Missouri State, where the Salukis and Bears will battle in the pool on October 1 and 2.
