
Salukis Surpass Missouri State, First Time since 2015

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Outswimming in dual competition for the first time since 2015, the SIU women's swimming and diving program defeated Missouri State, 187-166, inside the Hammons Student Center in Springfield. The Salukis men, while taking two of four relays over the two-day dual, fell 145.5-205.5.

Freshman Celia Pulido took home a three-peat of individual first-place titles, including the 200-backstroke event on Friday evening, now owning the SIU school record at 1:57.56.
Taking the first relay of the 2021-22 season, the squad of Zander Minano, Will Chavez, Alex Schlueter, and Donat Csuvarszki completed a 1:23.56 relay in the men's 200-freestyle to start off the first-place titles on Friday.
Battling in the 100-breaststoke, freshman newcomer Ali Robertson surpassed teammate and record-holder sophomore Mima Zaborska for the first and second place on the podium, clocking in at 1:04.35 and 1:05.29.
With his fourth first-place mark of his Saluki career and first in the 100-free, Terry Yang pulled a men's indiviudal win in the event, posting a 46.48 finish.
One of two diving newcomers for the women, freshman Farida Moussa finalized Friday evening for the Salukis with a first-place finish on the one-meter board, recording 233.55 points, following closely behind with senior Laura Mircea (214.05).

Bringing the first top-title in the morning, sophomore sprinter, Donat Csuvarszki got on the board in the 50-freestyle event. The MAC bronze medal champion in the event swam a strong 21.29 for his first individual title of the season.
Sophomore distancer, Fernanda Sanchez gained a length ahead of Missouri State's Payton Smith, outlasting 4:30.65 in the women's 400-IM for a first-place title, seven seconds over the Bears.
Showcasing the strong freshman talent, Celia Pulido took home her third first-place title of the dual in the morning, clocking a 55.12 finish in the 100-backstroke, while Jasmine Rau narrowly edged Missouri State's Sami Roemer at 57.01 in the 100-fly.
Wrapping up the swimming competition, both A relay squads overtook Missouri State in the morning. The women (Forbord, Montgomery, Romero, Pulido) found a 3:28.31 pace in the 400-free relay, while the men (Cernek, Chavez, Csuvarszki, Yeap) distanced themselves to the Bears at 3:03.51.
On the diving boards, the Salukis took the one and two top-spots for the women's three-meter and men's one-meter on Saturday morning. Freshman Farida Moussa, who swept the one-meter, took first on the three-meter board (255.30), followed by senior Laura Mircea (241.65). On the men's side, freshman newcomer Lee Haywood stuck gold with 296.77 points on the one-meter board, with senior Kyle Campbell earning 271.05 points on suit.

The Salukis are staying home in Carbondale next week, while challenging McKendree to a dual on Friday, Oct. 8 at 2pm and Missouri on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1pm inside Shea Natatorium.
