
Salukis Travel to Valpo for Mid-Week Match Up

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- In the first mid-week match of the regular season, SIU (0-9-1) heads to Indiana to face the Beacons of Valparaiso (5-4-1)Â on Wednesday at Brown Field. The 7:30pm (CT) kickoff will be streamed via ESPN+, with live in-game stats.
A Look at Last Game: Finding points on the board for the second consecutive game, SIU fell 1-2 to Illinois State Saturday night in Normal-Bloomington. The Salukis held the Redbirds scoreless, accumulated 13 shots with eight saves from junior keeper Maddy Alaluf. Sophomore forwards McKensey Bunch and Sam Dodd led the Dawgs with three shots, one on-goal with junior midfielder Quinn Parks' late 79th minute header into the Redbird goal.
So far in 2021: Southern Illinois opened up scoring in the 2-3 loss to Kansas City in their home opener, bringing in four shots-on-goal to SIU and fell starting last weekend to highly notarized Vanderbilt, 0-5 and losing 0-4 to Lipscomb on Sunday in another heavy-midfield match with keeper Ary Lougher earning her first collegiate start. On Thursday, SIU was upended by SIUE, 0-5. The last non-conference match at home, the Dawgs left answered, in a 0-2 loss to Bellarmine in midfield action. Starting conference, the Dawgs held Missouri State scoreless in the second half, but dropped 0-3 on Friday night in Carbondale. Hailey Blanchard scored the third goal of the Salukis' season, while SIU fell 1-3 to Murray State in their final non-conference game of 2021 on Sunday. Heading back into conference action, the Salukis scored for the second consecutive game at Illinois State, which resulted in a 1-2 fall.
Scouting Valparaiso: Balancing around .500, the Beacons finished 5-4-5 overall in the delayed Spring season. Valparaiso advanced to the final round of the MVC Women's Soccer Tournament after progressing past Evansville off of penalty kicks, and defeating Indiana State in double-overtime, 1-0 in the semifinals. Picked fourth in the MVC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Beacons see the return of All-MVC First Team selections Kiley Dugan and Nikki Coryell -- the reigning MVC Goalkeeper of the Year.
The last match-up on February 28 and the first meeting of the Salukis in their newfound conference, resulted in a scoreless double-overtime draw in Carbondale. The Salukis shot 6 times to Valpo's 11, while playing on the offensive attack drawing four corners. The Beacons are 2-0 in the Valley (5-4-1), holding Illinois State and Indiana State scoreless with 1-0 wins, while taking the Sycamores into overtime.
From the Preseason: The Salukis compiled a 0-1-2 record in 2021 exhibition matches, allowing only three goals. Sophomore Ashlyn Henrie has shined in her second season with SIU so far, recording one goal and one assist in the three games. The Dawgs opened exhibition play on Wednesday, drawing 1-1 to Southeast Missouri, while falling to UIC 0-1 on Friday, and turning up another 1-1 draw to Belmont in exhibition. Four freshmen and seven of ten Saluki newcomers saw action in the preseason.
