
Swimming Sweeps Podium on Senior Night

CARBONDALE, Ill. --  The Southern Illinois Salukis' throttled the Panthers of Eastern Illinois, 213 to 47 (men) and 210.5 to 51.5 (women), Friday night inside Shea Natatorium on the campus of Southern Illinois University. The final dual meet of the regular season, SIU recognized seniors Kyle Campbell, Abbey Desmet, Sierra Forbord, Eden Girloanta, Drake Manuello, Zander Minano, Laura Mircea, Deven Speed, Anna Stephan, and Zheng Yang Yeap for their work and dedication to the Southern Illinois program.

Earning another "three peat" of the season, freshman Celia Pulido walked off with first place titles in the 200-free (1:50.96), 100-free (50.85), and 100-IM (59.12).
Staying on top, Spain-native Lucia Romero found two first place titles during the evening. Romero found the wall in the quick-paced 50-backstroke at 26.12 and 100-backstroke at 56.41.
Senior Eden Girloanta sought the fastest time of the evening in the women's 1000-freestyle. The Israeli distance-swimmer clocked in at 10:42.90, her first first-place title in the event all season.
Sierra Forbord made a comeback in her signature event, bringing home a first-place title in the 50-freestyle, clocking in her second best time of the season (23.88).

The relay quartet of Adam Cernek, Gustav Perrson, Zander Minano, and Donat Csuvarszki started the evening off for the men. The "A" team clocked in a 1:31.69 race, surpassing the runner-ups by over four seconds.
Zheng Yang Yeap left with some hardware. The senior placed first in the 200-free (1:42.45)) and 100-IM (52.04) to start off a Saluki podium sweep followed by Minano (52.24), and Cernek (52.35).
Finding his third winning title, junior Terry Yang took home first place in the 500-freestyle event. Setting a good mark at 4:50.83.
Sophomore Trey Smith earned his first first-place title in the 100-butterfly Friday evening. The Kansas-native paced at 51.31 and performed his second-best of the season.

With weeks to train, the SIU women are back in the pool in Iowa City, Iowa, as Northern Iowa hosts the 2022 MVC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 16-19. The men are back in action as the Salukis will host the 2022 MAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships inside Shea Natatorium, March 2-5.
