
Salukis Slide past Little Rock and Henderson State

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas --  Southern Illinois swimming swept both podiums in the last tri-meet of the 2021-22 season at Little Rock. The women walked away with wins against Little Rock and Henderson State with 171 points to the Trojans and 212 points to HSU, while the men surmounted 184 points against the men of the Division II Reddies' 78.

Apryl Paquette took home her first first-place finish in an event this season. The freshman from Florida notched her new personal best in the 1000-freestyle, touching the wall at 10:35.22.
Coming up to battle with her fourth first-place title of the season was sophomore Fernanda Sanchez in the 200-freestyle. Having only competed in the event once this year, the Mexico-native clocked in at 1:55.15 as the leading Saluki. She also completed her first "three-peat" of her career, winning first-place accolades in the 500-free and 200-IM throughout the afternoon.
Canadian sophomore Ella Kerr preserved through the 200-breaststroke. Kerr clocked in at 2:24.07, just ahead of the runner-up spot held by Saluki Melanie Scheiblein.
Freshman Celia Pulido took home first-place titles in her signature events, 100- (54.59) and 200-back (1:57.59), while also marking two new pool records inside the Donaghey Aquatic Center.

Junior Terry Yang made the distance for the SIU men up against Henderson State. Yang hit the wall at 10:03.75 to mark a first place title in the 1000-freestyle, followed by teammates Ben Rutledge (10:08.02), and Austin Kinsler (10:08.39).
Finding his second best-time of 2021-22, Gustav Persson was the lead in another Saluki sweep of the podium in the 100-breaststroke at 58.00 even. He also took home the top spot in the 200, clocking in at 2:08.04.
Junior Max Ransom found the first place title in the 200-fly (1:57.21), his first of 2022. The 1, 2, 3 spots were all held by Southern Illinois with sophomore Trey Smith (1:58.54), and freshman Selim Hassan (2:00.01).
Wrapping up with the relays was the quartet of Zander Minano, Alex Santiago, Will Chavez, and Donat Csuvarszki at 1:23.09 in the 200-free relay to wrap up the Salukis' time in the water at Little Rock.
